Cole Cox Lovejoy

  • Lismore City Bowling Club 171 Molesworth Street Lismore, NSW, 2480 Australia (map)

Performing sophisticated music requires outstanding skills, and Dr Fred Cole on piano, Hans Lovejoy on double bass and the talented Ben Cox on drums fit the requirement.

Fred can play virtually anything you throw at him. His reading skills are phenomenal, and he produce those sounds exactly how they were played. Improvisation, though is the backbone of this genre, and it's an aspect the musicians are all very aware of.

Hans Lovejoy on double bass is well known for his work with Sara Tindley, James Cruickshank, Geoff Wright and Tommee, to name a few. He is also the former bassist from the Big Band At The End Of The Universe. 'With my next project, I wanted to scale it back and focus just on the trio sound,' says Hans.

Drummer Ben Cox has risen to the challenge and provides a great backbone to the ensemble, according to Hans. ‘He is playing the time feel of a seasoned veteran. He listens. He interacts and improvises just at the right time.'

This ensemble has a great love for jazz trio piano music – Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and the like. It is music that pushed swing, harmony and interaction to a new level. What is rewarding about this is recreating the feel – note by note – of these classic recordings. It takes a lot of time and commitment to get it right.

Below are couple of / great tracks from the trio’s 2010 album Jazz Standards 2010. bags Groove and Poinciana. Enjoy.
