Ben van Kleef Quintet

  • Lismore City Bowling Club 171 a Molesworth Street Lismore, NSW, 2480 Australia (map)

The Ben van Kleef Quintet is a contemporary jazz ensemble bringing together five experienced musicians with a shared interest in strong melodies, attentive listening, and open improvisation. Led by trumpeter Ben van Kleef, the group reflects his long-standing connection to jazz, alongside his work as a conductor with the Lismore Symphony Orchestra and Lismore City Concert Band.

Pianist Steve Newcomb contributes a distinctive compositional voice shaped by work across jazz, pop, and classical music. His writing has been described by the Sydney Morning Herald as existing "in a knotty zone where Thelonious Monk meets classical music."

Saxophonist Julius Hoffstetter adds a broad tonal palette and deep experience gained through decades of performing, recording, and leading ensembles.

The rhythm section provides a flexible and responsive foundation. Bassist Connor Perkins brings a strong sense of time and clarity, informed by the jazz tradition,

while drummer Dom Machen, one of Brisbane's most in-demand drummers, supports the music with precision, sensitivity, and stylistic range.

The quintet focuses on jazz standards, approached with curiosity rather than strict reverence—familiar repertoire explored through fresh arrangements, modern harmony, and plenty of space for improvisation. The result is music that feels grounded, conversational, and engaging, with each performance shaped by the moment.
